Chapter 162: Worth Trusting

Chapter Cast (at the end of the chapter)

If you've ever been roused from sleep by the feel of a lover sliding over your body and sliding herself down on your cock, you can understand what a pleasant way that is to greet the day. Keekah's pussy was hot and wet, and she started to ride before I could even fully realize I was inside her. I cast a sleepy glance to the side to see our twins curled together, dozing, so I turned my attention to my wife's body rising over me.

In the near-darkness, it was hard to see her face, but I was sure Keekah's trademark pleasure-smile was full and lovely. She began to cum minutes after mounting me, and I enjoyed edging inside her a while before pushing her onto her back and settling down between her legs, tasting the sweet and tart flesh of her vulva. I lapped her slowly, bringing her to orgasm again, a softer, gentler climax than her first, then I penetrated her once more, mating with Keekah until I spurted my cum into her young pussy.

"Mmm," she purred after we kissed and cuddled a moment, "more babies."

I heard someone moving in the common shelter, the short, narrow hallway letting sounds pass easily between the rooms. I kissed Keekah again and offered to keep watch of our little ones so she could bathe and relieve herself. She did so, soon returning to nurse the waking infants. I went to see about coffee and breakfast.

It was well before dawn, I figured, and no one was out in the darkness. As I got the fire roused from its slumber, I was joined by Kinnon and Nina. "Morning, you two."

"Morning," they said in unison, then Nina added, "That was fun last night."

"Agreed," I replied.

"I think most of the new folks finally got a taste of how things might be here. Up til now, it had been mostly hard work and sleep for them in the North."

I put the coffee on and asked, "So things are still working out with you all?"

"Yes," Nina replied, "Hakee's come all the way around, I think."

"Seems to have," I agreed.

Kate walked up, looking a like she'd just awoken. I greeted and kissed her, then excused myself to empty my bladder. I walked down to the usual spot and passed Hakee, pausing to hug and kiss her, then grabbed my penis and released my flow.

"Oh," I heard someone say behind me. Unable to stop peeing, I turned and saw Felicity standing a few feet away, her eyes averted. "Didn't know this was the unisex john."

"Sorry," I offered.

"It's fine. Need to go too bad to care." But she cared enough to walk several yards further along, closer to the surf, and squatted down, pulling up the same dress she wore the night before just enough to clear it from her stream. I could see nothing of her below, and I looked away with some guilt at trying to watch the woman pee.

I finished up and started to walk back.

"Wait up a sec," Felicity called. I turned to see her still squatting down and realized she might be doing more than peeing. So I idled, not watching her finish up. She splashed some water between her legs, and the darkness hid her exposed buttocks or privates, whichever was currently pointed in my direction.

She walked up to me and said, "I talked with Kinnon a while yesterday."

"Good..."

"Just wanted you to know," Felicity added.

"I hope you find her trustworthy."

"We'll see. We'll see..."

"Anything on your mind?"

She shrugged, the sun's light just starting to add color on the horizon, "Just being friendly. It's a new, old, thing I'm trying."

I almost made a joke about preferring it to cold and angry, but I caught myself before voicing it. Instead, I simply said, "I appreciate that."

"You have your hands in everything, Kal. I see it already."

"Well, I sort of have to. I am the Chief and all."

"No, I mean people. Relationships. Kinnon told me how you helped the three of them keep things in perspective and offered a shoulder when needed. Popko told me that you helped him adjust to being here with his 'secret' which apparently isn't much of a secret any longer. And you've taken a personal interest in helping me."

"I care, Felicity. I don't just say I care. I really do. You're all family to me. You are family. And I want my family to be happy."

"Anyone else and I'd think you were just a womanizer. Half think that anyway, what with all the woman you have wrapped around your finger. You even convinced Kinnon to have sex with you, and she's a dyke."

"Not sure 'dyke' is a nice thing to call her... and Kinnon wasn't the one needing to be convinced."

"Yeah, I know, on both counts. Sorry. But still... You have, what... four official wives? Several more lovers. This almost feels like one of those Mormon polygamous cults, except you run around naked, and you don't kill other men, like Ekoh, who fuck your wives."

"I... I can't help that I am easily attracted, Felicity. Both physically and emotionally. I suppose that might be a weakness, sometimes, and that you might see this, out of context, as me being a predator. I'm not. Women trust me here, I hope, because I'm worth trusting. They love me because I'm worth loving. I don't take it for granted, and I don't beg or guilt or connive my way into relationships. They just fall out of the way I, and those around me, share common goals, common pleasures."

She was quiet a moment as we slowly walked back towards the fire. "I don't trust easily any more, Kal. I won't give that up."

"I don't expect you to."

"I'm just saying," Felicity's voice softened, "I'm just saying that... I'm close to trusting you. That scares the shit out of me."

I nodded but didn't reply.

"If I snap at you... if I'm cold or mean... just know... I'm aware of why now. I'm just... protecting myself, okay?"

"I understand."

"I don't like it. I don't like me when I can't feel safe. But... you have been the one person who has shown me that I might find someone trustworthy again. You, and Kate, but she's a woman."

"I'm humbled. If I can do anything, ever, just say so. Not for pity, but... for friendship."

"I like the sound of that, I really do," she replied, "but don't expect me to give this up quickly... it is all still very fresh... But... I admit... this place is a bit of a second chance for me. It's a new year, one which I hope goes better than the last. I'm thinking of staying, Kal, that's really what I'm getting at. I'd thought about wanting to go back to my parents, but I'm not ready for that now, if ever. I want... I want a chance to heal and find myself again, and I think... if you're worthy of trust... maybe I can have the space and support I need here."

"I'd like that," I told her. "I can't vouch for all the new folks. I don't know everyone well. But, of those who've been here, those I've know for years, Manu, Tok, Keekah, Bailey, Kate, everyone from the original Phoenicians, they are the kindest, gentlest people I've ever known. Of all the places you could have ended up, and despite the cruel luck which brought you here, Phoenix has the people who can befriend you and give you the love and support you seek."

She nodded, and said, "I like the sound of that, too. I just wanted you to know I'm staying. I know I'd left that up in the air. Maybe one day, I'll want to go see my parents again, but not any time soon. Thanks... for making my life here... so far... more pleasant than the one I left."

- - -

Little by little, Felicity was able to crack open her protective shell and peek outside. I didn't expect miracles or believe the damage would ever be completely undone, but the woman did have strength and there were moments when it began to show through. In the middle of that first day of 2016, when the heat was powerful, she took Takino aside and insisted they work on an extra few minutes of reading instruction. When they finished, her laugh of delight was so surprising that it drew more than a couple of us to see if everything was okay.

Several times that day, I had the impulse to go find Bailey and Katie. It was so strange to not be able to see them that I actually felt rather down. I missed them both, so used to my rock, my Bailey, always being close by when I needed just a hint of sunshine in my day. Katie was a delight to watch over, never failing to bring a smile to my face even if she'd just messed her diaper. I felt a little lost without the two of them.

But those sensations were buoyed by all that I did have when I saw Keekah with the twins, or Amy caring for the sick Azure. I had no time to pine like a child for my young wife and daughter, neither of whom was really very far away, when I had other responsibilities, other loves, who could use a little attention. I made sure to take both young mothers tea and big helpings of the fried tubers and onions which Hakee made for lunch, snatching a couple of pieces of dark chocolate to lift their spirits. I watched Harry and Hermione a while, reading to them as Keekah took care of some work she'd insisted on completing in the common room, then I let Amy nap with me while I held Azure, the little girl coughing less but still not fully herself. I worked over some of Gale's and Tok's plans for the upcoming weeks and ensured I understood what we needed to accomplish.

I'd been feeling a bit odd all day, though it was not particularly difficult to push through and do what needed done. Like most everyone else, life on Phoenix meant ignoring most of those little niggles which made you contemplate taking a day off work, or staying in bed just because you had a tummy ache, or a bit of congestion. There was too much to do on the island, too many people depending on whatever assignment you'd been handed, to give into such trivial things. Still, I'd developed a bit of a headache, my brain a little foggy. I'd chalked it up to the amount of sleep I'd not been getting combined with the unusual stress and the Summer heat. It really wasn't much of a hinderance.

Kinnon ducked her head into the common shelter where Keekah had just finished up and Amy was nestled against me, Azure asleep in my arms, a notebook spread out over top of the little one as I tried to finish my reading. The woman smiled at me and crept closer, kneeling down to press her hand to Azure's forehead. She nodded as if to say there was nothing to worry about, then pressed her hand to Amy's head as if she was just checking. Amy didn't stir. Then Kinnon put her hand on my forehead. Her eyes drew tight and she didn't pull her hand away quickly.

"Kal," she whispered, "might be running a fever."

"It's the heat," I said quietly, "I'm fine."

"Just want to be sure." She left but returned quickly with her small medical bag, pulling out a thermometer and pushing it between my lips and under my tongue. When she drew it away, she whispered, "One-oh-two. Yep, fever."

I shrugged, "I don't feel too bad. Just a bit jumbly, I suppose, no different than many days."

"I'll get you some acetaminophen. Can't have you down for the count, Kal. I need you to take this seriously."

"Hmmm?" Amy stirred and saw Kinnon leaning over us. "What's wrong? Azure?"

"She's fine, sweetie," Kinnon shushed her, "just fine. Sleeping like... well... a baby. It's your husband who's running the fever."

"Kal?" Amy looked up at me, "Not feeling well?"

"Don't feel that bad, really."

"Be right back," Kinnon said.

"She told me I have a fever of one-oh-two."

"Oh, no..."

"I... uh... I suppose I shouldn't be around Azure... just in case I've got something she might pick up..."

Amy nodded, taking the girl and carefully settling her onto a small padded blanket. "Thanks for giving me a break," she said, "Love you, Kal."

"I love you. I'll go hang out in the med room, I suppose, at least until I convince Kinnon I'm fine."

"You'll do no such thing, the convincing part, anyway," Amy said sternly. "If Kinnon says you aren't well, you listen to her. Can't have you getting worn down just because you think you're fine. Or getting someone else sick..."

I nodded, "Right, as usual, my love."

"As usual? You mean 'always,' I think," Amy grinned.

"Naturally." I blew her a kiss, taking the notebooks with me as I passed down the hallway to the medical shelter.

Kinnon was just on her way back to bring me the medication. "Ah, good. Here," she said, handing me two white pills and a cup of water. "A cool bath wouldn't hurt either. I've got to get back to work with Kate and Felicity, but I'll check in on you shortly."

"So, what... I'm just supposed to take it easy?"

"That's exactly what you're supposed to do."

"I'm not very good at that."

"I expect you're not," she smiled, "but I think you'd much rather do so by choice than have that fever spike and leave you no other options."

I nodded, "True. I'll do my best."

- - -

Taking it easy turned out to involve me laying back on one of the mattresses in the medical shelter and passing out for much of the afternoon. Despite the heat and the still air, my body decided Kinnon was right on target. I woke slowly, a little confused. My body felt odd, a bit distant. My brain was much more foggy than usual, but I thought that might be due to the odd mid-day nap.

"Hey, Sweetie," Amy's voice said from afar. I turned, my neck stuck in molasses. Was I sitting up? I wasn't really sure. "Easy, Kal."

"What... what's going on? Why am I sleeping in the day?"

She said quietly, the concern growing on her face, "Just a fever, Kal. You and Hakee both, it seems." Amy pointed behind me and I saw that Hakee was likewise reclining in the shelter, her eyes closed.

"She okay?"

Amy nodded, "Just a fever, like yours. Nothing else right now."

I tried to reason my way through what was happening. "Who... who's in charge?" I asked. I was down, I was discovering, and my second was, as well.

"Kate's ensuring everyone maintains their work, not that she needs to do much. Even the newcomers are pitching in with extra effort after enjoying the celebration last night. You just relax and try to sleep."

"I can't," I replied, trying to sit up and slowly succeeding, "on either count."

Kinnon came in then and frowned at me. "No making my job harder, Kal." She nodded to Amy.

Amy blew me a kiss and left the room.

Kinnon took my temperature. "One-oh-two-point-five. Not what I'd hoped to see. Time for another dose, and this time, I insist on a bath for you."

I nodded, suddenly feeling weary. I'd forgotten how hard it was to concentrate when feverish. This wasn't the first time I'd suffered such things on Phoenix, but that didn't make it any easier to pull my mind together enough to do more than follow Kinnon's orders. Moments later, I was in the tub, relatively-cool water rising around me. I swallowed more pills and relaxed.

I must have dozed because I came back to awareness when I heard someone moving inside the room. Felicity was standing a few feet from the tub, a cloth mask over her face. I watched her a moment as she looked at me with the water in the bath doing nothing to hide my nakedness. We had a few of the surgical face masks, but I knew those were being reserved for emergencies. The cloth was ragged and wrapped tightly around Felicity's mouth and nose.

"Hey, you," she said gently, "heard you weren't feeling well."

I nodded, "So they tell me."

"Kinnon's keeping everyone away, but... I just wanted to see if I could do anything..."

In my thick state of mind, I was barely able to recognize how meaningful it was that the woman had come to see me. "Don't think so... thanks..."

"Well... if I can... have Kinnon find me, okay?"

I nodded again, "Thanks, Felicity..."

"You're welcome..."

She turned to look at where Hakee was sleeping on her side, then she left the medical shelter.

Kinnon replaced her, eyeing Hakee a moment, then she looked at me, saying, "Alright, you've about warmed that water enough, I think. Let's get you out of there and let Hakee have a go." She helped me to my feet, my legs light hollow stems, light but thick. Kinnon dried me off then settled me back onto the mattress.

I watched as she drained the tub then refilled it with cooler water. "Hakee, sweetie," she said, stroking the young woman's shoulder.

"Hmmm?"

"I want to get you in the bath. Come on, you can relax again in the tub." Hakee complied slowly, letting Kinnon lead her into the bath as the water continued to fill it. She caught my eye a moment and I saw how haggard Hakee looked. I expected I probably wasn't much better off in her view.

I rested my head back on the pillow.

I woke again to hear Hakee saying my name, "Kal? You awake?"

"Something close, I think..."

"This sucks..."

"Yeah..."

"Doing okay?" she asked.

"Suppose so... not much to do. It would drive me crazy but I'm too foggy to much care right now."

"Same. Kinnon's taking good care of us."

"She is," I agreed.

"We'll pull through."

Feverish chills swept across my skin and I pulled a blanket over me. This wasn't exactly the way I'd hoped to start the new year.

- - -

What followed was several full days of being miserable, bored, and frustrated. I didn't feel worse than when I'd been struck down on New Year's Day, but I didn't feel any better, either. Other than Kinnon, no one else came to visit Hakee and me, the surgeon keeping others away since it was likely to be a virus or something else contagious. She continued to monitor us, and I worried that she, too, might pick up whatever we had.

Hakee and I chatted from time to time, sometimes unraveling into weird conversations driven more by the fevers than reality, but at least I wasn't alone. She began to feel much better on January 4th and Kinnon told her the fever had broken. Hakee stayed with me the rest of that day and the next just to be sure she had recovered. Though weak and tired, she was feeling better, so on the 5th, she checked out of the medical shelter and retook her place in the main camp.

I heard good news over that time, that Azure's cough had cleared and she was back to normal, no worse for wear from what Kinnon told me. I'd had messages from many others, both North and South, wishing me well, including Bailey who nearly came back to the main camp to stay with me but Kinnon had insisted she not do so to avoid spreading the contagion any further.

On January 6th, my fever broke. I felt it almost immediately, my skin cooling but not chilled, the thickness in my head and limbs growing thinner. Kinnon wanted me to stick around another day to be certain, but she felt sure I had beaten whatever it was. So far, other than Hakee and me, no one else had taken ill.

It meant I was quarantined over Amy's seventeenth birthday on the 6th. I hated missing at least the opportunity to wish her well. It was hard to believe how quickly she'd grown from the skinny, frightened teen we'd found stowed away on the Hahonokoan's boat to the young woman, young mother, who was now helping to lead a community of almost forty people.

On the 7th, finally cleared that morning to check out of her care, I made my way to the fire pit and sat heavily in a chair, weaker than I'd expected. Hakee looked much better and offered me a warm hug and a cup of coffee in the last hour before dawn. Kinnon joined us and we sat quietly together a while, the day already quite warm, the breeze slowly building from the South.

"You take it easy today, Kal. Just because you're on the mend, you still need to let your body recover its strength."

"I'll do my best," I offered.

"Somehow I doubt that," Kinnon grinned, "but I'm serious. Stay out of the sun, off your feet as much as possible. Give yourself a couple of days, at least. No wood hauling, no heavy stuff. And," she repeated, "stay out of the sun."

I nodded, already considering whether a nap was in my near future. The coffee helped a bit, so I had a second cup as others began to join the fire. Most everyone greeted me and told me they were happy to see me up and about. Amy gave me a lovely hug and kiss and I wished her a belated seventeenth birthday. She waved off my apology and said it was no big deal. She and Keekah had enjoyed an evening together while Kate and Felicity watched the little ones.

"Keekah is quite back, isn't she?" I commented.

"Oh, for sure... she ate me like she hadn't tasted pussy in years."

"It had been weeks, for sure," I replied, "plus, your pussy tastes amazing..."

Amy purred and kissed my cheek, "Save that thought for when you're feeling better in a few days..."

"Oh, I will," I promised. More quietly, I asked, "So, how did Felicity do with the kids?"

Amy shrugged, "Good, I guess. She seemed happy enough to watch them when Kate suggested it. I have no complaints."

"And Azure's still doing okay?"

"She's great. Happy little girl this morning," she said, talking to the infant hanging off her shoulder, "got to drink Mommy's milk until you nearly popped."

I chuckled, then stroked Azure's little head. "You are a cute one, Azure. So glad you're feeling better."

- - -

Taking it easy for me was not, well, easy. I was used to being active, often involved in the heaviest labor in camp. I was as strong as anyone but Tok and Takino, perhaps Sebastian, and I'd come to rather enjoy the work, even when it was difficult. With others now filling in for me due to my illness, I decided to offer my child care services while I looked over some future plans for expanding the camp to include three, possibly four, new shelters, two new gardens further East, a storage cellar for keeping perishables cool, and an expansion of the snail farm. Keekah and Amy both accepted my offer and I found myself lounging on the porch of the common shelter with three little ones, the twins sleeping together on a thick blanket, Azure fidgeting a little in my lap.

Hakee came in and gave me some updates from the camp. Good progress had been made on the South gardens, all the planting done, largely smaller or lower-to-the-ground plants and those easier to manage. Onions, both hot and sweet peppers, greens of several varieties, some of the squashes transplanted from the North, several types of herbs, and other edibles were laid in rows. I told her I'd go admire them once it cooled down a bit that evening.

The much better news was that the fish and crabs had returned, so much so that those casting lines were keeping those doing the cleaning and preparing extra busy. Several newcomers had been taught how to gut and filet the fish, then how to set them to age and dry on the racks. We had so many crabs by midday that a crab chowder was made with canned corn, tubers, onions, aged fish stock, and powdered milk, along with black pepper and seasonings. It was, by far, the best thing I'd eaten in a long time. During my illness, when my stomach had been greatly unsettled, I'd been limited mostly to small meals of thin soups and moistened tuber-bread. Not terrible, but nothing worth celebrating. The crab chowder, though, that was so terrific that I personally cleaned the cook pot to ensure not one drop went to waste.

- - -

"Kal, my friend, wake up!"

Popko's voice was low but urgent as he roused me from sleep sometime in the night.

"What? What is it?"

"Something moves over the horizon."

I shot out of bed, ignoring that I'd probably just woken Keekah, Amy, and the three infants, then raced with Popko to where Takino was watching to the south. The night was dark and clear, stars by the millions adding texture overhead. The sea looked fairly calm though it was just another shade of black and hard to distinguish beyond the sand.

Almost due South there was an obvious yellow-white glow. Its source wasn't yet visible.

I felt my heart pounding, still weak from my sickness, the exertion of my run down the sand winding me. I realized we had to get moving and prepare for the worse.

We'd had little time to work with the newcomers on how to defend the South camp. With Hakee sick and little more than a week passed since their arrival, we'd only given them a general introduction to the defensive positions and basic instructions on where to go and what to do.

I sent Popko to rouse Hakee and the others and set the defense in motion. Takino stayed with me, binoculars to his eyes.

"Starting to see a shape come over," he said quietly after a moment.

"Moving fast?"

"No, slow and steady."

Popko ran up to me a couple of minutes later, handing me a rifle, a clip already in place. Since Popko was leading the defense in the South with Nina up North, I told them, "You two head back and get in position. Make sure they know what to do, Popko. I'll take the watch."

The young men were off quickly.

I took deep breaths to calm myself.

We'd been through this before.

Each time, we'd generally been lucky. No immediate threat to our lives or our way of life recently, though the latest arrival had certainly turned things serious once we understood the truth of the people living on the Humble Beginnings. There had been threats, in the past, and I tried not to bring back memories of gunfire and explosions and Keekah killing a man with a fire extinguisher.

But would this be another easy interaction? Was it random chance that brought a boat in our direction? Was it the Uhonamonans? Or Progress? Or Great Society? Another asshole like Dunston?

It would be different this time, even if things went smoothly, that I was sure. Whether it had been Kunomo, coming to trade, or Amu, arriving to stay on an island he'd once, for a short time, called home, or the arrivals of the Hahonokoans or the Uhonamonans, each interaction was unique.

As I looked through the binoculars to see the light shining off the bow of the boat cresting the horizon, I remembered, again, just how fragile a thing we had on Phoenix. We'd defend ourselves, yes, but against a determined or numerous aggressor, it was likely a Pyrrhic defense.

I turned back to the camp, satisfied that all candles had been extinguished, and, with Popko running the defense, everyone should be in place.

Whatever was to come, I stood on the shore, rifle in hand, and waited as calmly as the situation allowed.
